Paper used for making art was first recorded in Ancient China, 2nd century B.C. Although I am coming late to the paper party, I’ve had a love affair with it since I can remember. Collecting bits and bobs along my way, I have used it to cover books, make greeting cards, wrap gifts, write short stories and plays and love letters. Dyeing paper, coloring with crayons, drawing with pen and ink, following rivers of watercolor - there are endless possibilities bringing to life its color and texture all the while feeling the sensation of it beneath my fingers. All of the senses come forward but how I love to touch it, move it and mold it!
My paper paintings are visceral and sometimes very physical. Paper pieces are hand torn and hand placed in order to find the right shape and hue for each step in the process. Some are literally organic from nature’s gifts. Some evolve from contemporary processed fibers. Others include embellishments of embroidery with silk thread from Paris, unraveled saris from India, hand spun yarn from my secret stash. It is the paper canvas that lifts me up the most and what I want especially to share with you here. Please browse and read about any pieces in particular that might appeal. Every work of art has its own story. The stories continue when paintings move from place to place. Perhaps one of these will become a part of yours!
